Here is my attempt at a makeup 'tutorial,' a mock-up guide on how to apply makeup and create the classic 'Marilyn' look. Below is my work in progress consisting of hand drawn frames.
For this personal project, I began with the traditional animation technique, involving drawing frame by frame on paper and capturing the drawings using the now-defunct Omega machine (a truly old-school technique!). This traditional method was taught to students of the animation course at Central St Martins, where I studied. Though it was a long and laborious procedure, the magic that occurred when the drawn characters suddenly came to life was exhilarating. I now find its scratchy look interesting, and its vintage feel is captivating.
Recently, I unearthed the rough drawings I made at the time and decided to use them to create a finished product. In doing so, I drew and colored the frames in Procreate, then optimized them in Photoshop. Later, I edited the composition and sound in After Effects, adding some additional effects to blend everything together.
For my mock-up advertisement, I selected 'HOURGLASS,' a cosmetic brand I admire for being cruelty-free, vegan, and lush.
